As Mozilla Disses the Enterprise, Google Chrome Steps Into the Breach

Mozilla evangelist Aza Dotzler drew a line in the sand this week, saying that the company hasn't been concerned with the business community's complaints about its Firefox Web browser, and it shouldn't ever be. But IT administrators who winced at those words may have a new ally in Google's Chrome development team.

As popular as Firefox is with their users, businesses have been decrying Mozilla's typical, rapid-fire schedule of updates to the browser. They claim that the frenzied schedule poses a challenge for testing and deploying Firefox updates throughout an organization, particularly ones that may be supporting thousands of clients running Firefox, or those that have many custom in-house Web apps.

Even worse by enterprise lights, after only three weeks of release, Mozilla has declared Firefox 4 support end-of-lifed with the release of Firefox 5.

"Tying Firefox product development to an organizational process we do not control would make it difficult for us to continue to innovate for our users and the betterment of the Web," said another key spokesman, Mozilla channel manager Kev Needham.

While Mozilla reiterates that business organizations' interests are not critical to Firefox's development, Google is taking great lengths to reassure that same audience about its commitment to commercial customers. Glenn Wilson, product manager of Chrome for Business said that although Google's browser has just as rapid of an update process as Firefox (updates are pushed out every six weeks), the Chrome team is focused on achieving a balance between security updates and compatibility.

"We have been listening to admins and they have been helping drive a road map," Wilson said recently. For Google, adoption of Chrome in the enterprise, schools and government "is a priority," he added.

That priority takes shape in several native capabilities intended to make Chrome more appealing to IT. One such feature included is support for Group Policy. Although Google's Chrome team only supports the current version of Chrome, with Group Policy integration, administrators can delay updating until a newer version of Chrome is fully tested to ensure compatibility with custom Web apps or other browser-based software.

This way, in the event an update does break a critical piece of software, admins can say, "Don't update until we can find out what's going on," Wilson said.

System administrators can also manage usage of extensions for Chrome through Group Policy. There are several policy templates that Google offers for Chrome to help with the management and customization of Chrome settings in a corporate environment.

Another big feature for business users is an MSI installer, which allows IT to roll out Chrome using standard deployment methods.

Google also offers another tool to alleviate pain points for business—the Google Chrome Frame. It's a plug-in that delivers Chrome's Open Web technology and JaveScript engine to IE. Organizations who want to hold off on auto-updating Chrome can do so and still offer managed Chrome Frame to their users.

Additionally, Google Apps users can call Google for Chrome support, if needed.

In contrast to Mozilla, Google seems focused on not alienating businesses and a big reason for that is its continued push for Google Chrome OS. During the All Things Digital D9 conference in April, Rajen Sheth, a group product manager and business manager at Google, put it bluntly, "My mission is to bring Chrome to business and to ask how we make it something that can reshape the enterprise desktop."

Google is banking on its business customers' love for Chrome to naturally morph into love for Chrome OS. That's not a bad bet.

Mozilla retires Firefox 4 from security support

Upgrade to Firefox 5 to get patches, says company, but add-on compatibility issues may make some users hesitate Firefox 5 was Mozilla's decision to retire Firefox 4, the browser it shipped just three months ago. As part of Tuesday's Firefox 5 release, Mozilla spelled out vulnerabilities it had patched in that edition and in 2010's Firefox 3.6, but it made no mention of any bugs fixed in Firefox 4.

That's because Firefox 4 has reached what Mozilla calls EOL, for "end of life," for vulnerability patches. Although the move may have caught users by surprise, the decision to stop supporting Firefox 4 with security updates has been discussed by Mozilla's developers and managers for weeks.

A mozilla.dev.planning mailing list thread that started May 17 evolved into a back-and-forth about the rapid-release schedule and its impact on Firefox 4. Christian Legnitto, the Firefox release manager, put it most succinctly in a May 25 message. "Firefox 5 will be the security update for Firefox 4," Legnitto said. As Mozilla had said earlier, that means Firefox 4.0.1 -- shipped in late April to fix eight flaws -- was the one and only security update for Firefox 4.

Mozilla is essentially taking another page from Google Chrome's playbook. Google only outlines the patches it has applied to the current "stable" build, the most polished form of Chrome that is analogous to Mozilla's final releases. Google does not patch the flaws in earlier editions, primarily because it automatically updates the browser in the background, ensuing that virtually all users are running the most secure version.

Mozilla doesn't yet conduct automatic updates, but it has changed how upgrades to a new version are offered to Firefox users. "[For earlier major upgrades] we popped up a window asking people to opt in (major update offer)," said Legnitto in another message on the same thread. "For 4.0.1, users will need to opt out (minor update offer, like point/security releases)." Mozilla expects the opt-out approach will get more users onto the newest edition faster.

On Tuesday, Firefox 4 users started seeing the upgrade offer for Firefox 5 when a pop-up appeared reading: "A security and stability update for Firefox is available. It is strongly suggested that you apply this update for Firefox as soon as possible."In the offer, the default action was "Update Firefox." Only by clicking the "Ask Later" button or by closing the pop-up can users decline the upgrade. But some Firefox 4 users may want to opt out of the upgrade, even though that leaves them at risk to exploits of already patched bugs. One traditional area of concern is add-on compatibility, a pain point known to longtime Firefox users when they've moved from one version number to the next.

Firefox fans looking for a nice tasty update to their favorite web browser have something to look forward to next week. Mozilla released the Firefox 5 RC (Release Candidate) version of the browser yesterday (this is the step after beta and before the final release), and announced that it has plans to release the final version of the browser next week – assuming no major bugs are found or overhauls need to be done, which is usually the case.
In case you haven’t been keeping up with the Firefox nightly builds/beta, here is a list of features that have been added to the RC version of Firefox 5:

Added support for CSS animations;
The Do-Not-Track header preference has been moved to increase discoverability;
Improved canvas, JavaScript, memory, and networking performance;
Improved standards support for HTML5, XHR, MathML, SMIL and canvas;
Improved spell-checking for some locales;

The Firefox development channel switcher introduced in previous Firefox Beta updates has been removed.

No longer is a beta, Google’s Chrome Web browser a capable contender to Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. However, the search company's browser not have some basic features found in IE, Firefox and Opera, and limits users who want to characterize settings and customize their browser. In spite of its shortcomings, browser users should give Google Chrome a try. Just a few short months ago, Google surprised the Web world with the make public of the beta of Google Chrome, a new Web browser direct from the search massive itself. So what does the launch of Google Chrome 1.0 mean for the Web browsing world and the Web in general? Well, the simple fact that it is from Google has a major impact, and should put the browser in a good place to fight with Microsoft and Mozilla for market share. But what about the browser itself? From a severe usability standpoint, Google Chrome is one of the most attractive and instinctive browsers I have ever used, and is probably the most impressive first version of a browser ever. Once a user gets over some of the foibles and differences from other browser interfaces (such as tabs at the very top of the window and no file menus), Google Chrome quickly begins to feel like the right way to surf the Web. Microsoft preps to push IE 8; makes blocking tool available

As it has done with previous Internet Explorer (IE) releases, Microsoft has made available an IE 8 blocking toolkit to allow users to keep Microsoft’s browser from being downloaded automatically on their Windows machines. In a January 6 posting to the Microsoft IE blog, company officials noted that Microsoft is planning to push the final IE 8 release via its Automatic Update (AU), Windows Update (WU) and Microsoft Update (MU) update systems. To keep the release from being pushed, customers can download the blocker toolkit from the Microsoft Download Center. Unlike some previous versions of the toolkit, there is no expiration date on the latest blocker. The toolkit can be configured by running the registry file on client machines or via Group Policy, according to the IE 8 blog posting. Once the final IE 8 bits are ready, Microsoft is planning to mark them as a top priority for distribution, officials said via the blog entry: “The IE8 update will be released as the highest priority update for each operating system. For Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, it will be listed as Important. For Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, the update will be listed as High Priority. Delivery of IE8 via AU will begin after we make IE8 available from the Microsoft Download Center. Of course, users can always decline to install IE8 through AU when it is offered.” Microsoft hasn’t provided a final release target date for IE 8, other than to say some time in 2009. Late last year, company officials acknowledged Microsoft would not be releasing the final version of IE 8 before the end of calendar 2008, as some company officials had claimed previously. Instead, Microsoft is planning to distribute in the first quarter of 2009 one more public test release, Release Candidate 1, before it rolls out the final IE 8. I’m not sure if we’ll see RC 1 of IE 8 this week. While Microsoft is expected to release the official version of Windows 7 Beta 1 to private and public testers over course of the next three days, the build of IE8 that is part of Windows 7 Beta 1 is still Beta 2, company officials said on January 7. (The refreshed partner test build of IE 8 that Microsoft released privately in December was designated as “RC1″ but isn’t the official RC1 release, the Softies have said.) When I asked earlier this week, Microsoft officials wouldn’t comment on when IE 8 RC1 would go live.

Mozilla Stops Firefox 2 Support

The Mozilla Foundation has announced that it will cease support for the Firefox 2 browser next month, in spite of problems with Firefox 3.

Wave goodbye to support for that Firefox 2 browser. As of the middle of December the Mozilla Foundation will end support for it to let its developers focus on the more recent Firefox 3. On its site, Mozilla wrote: "Firefox 2.0.0.x will be maintained with security and stability updates until mid-December, 2008. All users are strongly encouraged to upgrade to Firefox 3." Firefox 2 received its most recent update just last week, at the same time Firefox 3.0.4 was released, which addresses several security flaws. There will only be one more Firefox 2 update. For all the hoopla surrounding its record-breaking release earlier this year, Firefox 3 has it critics, who claim the browser crashes too often and uses too much memory. When support for Firefox 2 ends, so will support for its underlying Gecko 1.8 layout engine, which also underpins the Thunderbird e-mail client, as well as several Gecko-based browsers. According to ZDNet, Mozilla will continue support for Thunderbird, but the browsers will likely have to rely on third party developers.

Mozilla is testing a private browsing feature for Firefox that would make it seem as if the browser session never occurred.

Mozilla has been planning a private browsing feature for its Firefox browser for a long time, but only now is that beginning to become reality, according to CNET. Although users can already use an extension to achieve the effect, it’s expected that it will be among the advances making its way into Firefox 3.1. The application is currently being tested in Minefield, where Mozilla tests applications. When the feature is enabled, all the history, cookies and passwords – everything – vanishes when the window is closed, as if the session had never happened. Users can even start a browsing session in the privacy mode. It can be started at any time during a session, although that will mean the current public session will have to close before re-opening in privacy mode.

It seems like in just about every department, Mozilla does things right. As a case in point, I was gratified to read CNET's interview with Mozilla's security maven, Window Snyder. Window's first name notwithstanding, she makes it clear that Mozilla groks security:

At a lot of companies, there's fear around security: you don't want to talk about what you're doing around security because one might deem it not enough--or might want to criticize it...We benefit from being open; it's the model for us and it's been successful for us.

It's an interesting article, one I encourage you to read. It's just one more reason to choose Mozilla and its open-source products like Firefox.

Symantec and Mozilla Firefox for HP Virtual Solutions

I recently attended the Symantec ManageFusion 2008 event in Orlando, Fla., and while at the show I was able to learn a lot more about Symantec's Endpoint Virtualization and use their SVS application virtualization product.

One of the cool things during the show was how Symantec showed off SVS in such a subtle way. In the event lounge, there were a number of HP workstations lined up for show attendees to use. These machines had a virtualized Firefox session on them, courtesy of Symantec and HP. This was great, because after each Internet session, it would securely clean things up before the next person jumped on, thanks to Symantec SVS containment.

During the show, I was fortunate enough to catch up with Scott Jones, technical product manager with Symantec Endpoint Virtualization. One of the great things about ManageFusion is the open access to team members like Scott. We had a great conversation about the show, but more importantly I wanted to find out more about what HP and Symantec were collaborating on.

Q: I see two stories here –- one is that HP is shipping Firefox pre-installed. That's news in itself. But for my audience, the more interesting part is that it's a virtualized client application. How did this come about?

A: HP is the hardware industry leader in virtualization and energy conservation in the datacenter. They are now extending that leadership to client computing via their Virtual Client Solutions and other initiatives. Mozilla Firefox for HP Virtual Solutions is a major step in that evolution. And having the Symantec virtualization agent pre-installed positions HP to do a lot of other interesting things down the road, not just the virtual browser.

Q: I assume there was some sort of competitive process to determine which virtualization product HP would use?

A: Absolutely. We were up against the other major vendors in the application virtualization category. Symantec won for a few reasons. Some were technical, like SVS' reset capability while preserving user settings and the competitive advantages we normally pitch. But I think Symantec's very strong existing alliance with HP had a lot to do with it as well. Altiris has a long history of going to market with HP successfully, and our catalog gives HP resellers a lot of up-sell options from the SVS Runtime that comes free with the PCs.

Q: What is the difference between SVS Runtime and the regular SVS product from Symantec?

A: The regular Symantec SVS product allows customers to repackage any software into the Symantec Virtual Software Archive (.VSA) format. VSA files may then be centrally managed and delivered via any standard management framework (such as Altiris, Microsoft System Center, etc.) or with the Symantec Streaming system that is available in the SVS Professional version of the product.

SVS Runtime is the core SVS application virtualization technology, with no Graphical User Interface (GUI) or server components. SVS Runtime enables customers to use software that is packaged by application vendors in the Symantec Virtual Runtime Archive (or .VRA) format. Application developers use Wise Installation Studio (also from Symantec) to build a .VRA for their product. Software vendors may also freely redistribute the SVS Runtime to their customers. Since HP business desktops now have SVS Runtime pre-installed, HP customers can easily consume any such virtualized software. Q: So can I use the SVS Runtime to virtualize other applications?

A: No. With SVS Runtime, you can only use applications that have been pre-packed in the .VRA format by the application vendor. If you want to be able to virtualize any software yourself, purchase the regular SVS product from HP or Symantec. Q: How does a virtual Web browser relate to Symantec's virtualization strategy?

A: Symantec believes that the convergence of security and management is a natural step toward "confidence in a connected world." To support that strategy, Symantec acquired Altiris in April of 2007. Altiris is the world's leading brand of endpoint management solutions and the company demonstrated leadership in that space by being the first client configuration management vendor to add application virtualization to its catalog, when SVS shipped back in March 2006. Symantec believes that virtualization is key to the next generation of client management and that application virtualization will best serve customers when it is ubiquitous. Having Symantec SVS pre-installed on all business desktops from the world's largest hardware manufacturer is a key step toward that ubiquity. The Web browser was just a compelling first use case.

Q: Devil's advocate question for you -- Why virtualize a Web browser, especially Firefox, which is already more secure, right?

A: Well, like we say on the Welcome Page, "Firefox already does a lot to ensure that you stay safe on the Web. But sometimes the unexpected happens. Been surfing the Web with undesired results? Machine getting slow lately? Things showing up that you know shouldn't be there? With Mozilla Firefox for HP Virtual Solutions, changes made to your machine from within Firefox are saved into the virtual layer and can be easily undone, like you'd never been on the Net! Quickly put things back to their original state by clicking the Reset shortcut on your Start Menu." So it's not just a security thing –- though virtualization is indeed an extra layer that complements the security tools shipped by HP. It's also a stability thing –- stability of the browser and stability of the machine, keeping things working smoothly. In fact, our tag line for the project is "Smart Stability." Q: How does Mozilla Firefox for HP Virtual Solutions compare with Google Chrome?

A: For one thing, Chrome is currently an unsupported beta. Mozilla Firefox for HP Virtual Solutions is a released product supported directly by HP. Q: Can anyone just download this?

A: There will be a Softpaq (if not already posted) for HP customers to download and install on eligible desktop models -– basically every business desktop shipped from Sept. '08 onward. So if you want the complete package we built for HP, with the localization and some other bells and whistles, you need to buy an HP business desktop. However, Symantec has been providing a basic Firefox installation in a virtual layer as a sample application since SVS first came out in beta. Anyone can get that package from our Juice Web community site. You'll need to have SVS, of course. Download and purchase options are on that same Web site. Q: Altiris used to give SVS away free for personal use. Is Symantec still doing that?

A: Yes. You can get a free, agent-only download under a restricted license that lets you put SVS on your personal machine. It's available from several sources. They're listed on the Juice site as well. Q: On those "other interesting things" you mentioned –- now that SVS is on their boxes, I have to believe HP will be using it for more than just Firefox. Can you share any specific plans?

A: No specifics yet. Stay tuned. But there are so many things that come to mind that could benefit HP, its resellers, the customers' IT staffs, and the end users.

HP and their resellers sell a lot of software. Their customers buy and use a lot of software. Virtualized software requires less testing and less support. It "just works." And when it's streamed as well, license compliance is guaranteed.

I look at it this way. Both the software vendors and the end customers have an inherent interest in assuring the following for a given application:

1. That the software is readily available to authorized end users when they need it. 2. That the latest version of the software is being used. 3. That it functions correctly. 4. That license compliance is maintained.

I want to again thank Scott Jones of Symantec for taking the time to speak with me during the show and for helping me gain a better understanding about what Symantec is doing with SVS and HP.

Mozilla Aims Again at Mobile Browsing

Mobile browsing itself is an increasingly growing market. Strategy Analytics has reported that there are currently 172 million smart phones in use today. That number will grow to 462 million by 2012.

While Fennec developers are aiming to get a piece of the pie, they admit there is still much work that needs to be done.

"Our priority right now is performance and responsiveness," Sullivan said. "There are projects underway like TraceMonkey, speculative parsing, graphics, networking and other improvements that will make the browser much faster and make it a good platform for application developers."

The TraceMonkey project is Mozilla's new JavaScript engine, designed to be the fastest engine in the space -- eclipsing Apple's SquirrelFish or Google's V8. TraceMonkey appears in Firefox 3.1 Beta 1.

Beyond speed, Mozilla also faces the challenge of mobile platform availability. Currently, Fennec is only available for Nokia's OS2008, which runs on the Nokia N810 Internet Tablets. A Windows Mobile port is in the works as well, though it's not part of the first Alpha release. Mozilla has, however, released desktop versions of Fennec for Mac, Linux and Windows users to test.

"That's right -- you can install Fennec on your Windows, OS X or Linux desktop too!" Mark Finkle, Mozilla platform evangelist, wrote in his blog. "We want you to be able to experiment, provide feedback, write add-ons and generally get involved with the Mozilla Mobile project, even if you don't have a device."

Mozilla is currently investigating the development of Fennec for other platforms as well, though not all mobile users -- notably, Research in Motion (RIM) BlackBerry users -- will be on the list.

"Mozilla is a member of the LiMo Foundation, and are evaluating Symbian and other platforms," Sullivan said. "We are not actively developing for RIM at this time."

Even with ports for other mobile platform, clawing its way into the overall market for mobile browsers may still be challenging. Many mobile carriers tend to lock their handheld devices to limit the ability of users to install applications of their choice, though that situation is changing. For instance, both the Apple iPhone and the Google-backed Android mobile operating system offer application "markets," where users can buy and download apps to add to their phones.

"The market for third-party application has opened up quite a lot, so we expect lots of users to download and install," Sullivan said. "We are also working on distribution in cases where it aligns with our values and mission."

Mozilla this week hired Ajaxian co-founders Dion Almaer and Ben Galbraith to head up a new group that will focus on the creation of developer tools for the open Web. "We believe that there's tremendous opportunity for innovation in tools that increase developer productivity, enable compelling user experiences, and promote the use of open standards," Chris Beard, vice president and general manager of Mozilla Labs, wrote in a Tuesday blog post. "We're there in the trenches building these Ajax apps and a lot of the stuff that we're doing is way, way too hard for us," Alamaer said in a video announcement. "It doesn't have to be that hard on the open Web." The duo talked to Mozilla and were "surprised to find out that Mozilla wanted to invest in this area, and they wanted to create a team to address productivity on the Web to create developer tools," Galbraith said on the video. The Developer Tool Labs will look at the problem and see where it makes sense to step in, they wrote on the Ajaxian blog. "We are going to be experimenting, and thinking about how to make developers' lives better in different ways, so we aren't expecting to see traditional tools come out of this group." The newest alpha adds new video support, background JavaScript calculations

Mozilla Corp. on Friday launched the second alpha of Firefox 3.1, adding new video support and boosting the speed of some JavaScript computations.

Firefox 3.1 Alpha 2, code-named "Shiretoko," will be the last in a short series of alpha editions; Mozilla has set a late September code freeze for Beta 1 and will presumably deliver the first preview for the general public next month.

Mozilla added support for the new video element to Alpha 2 and the opening round of what's called "Web worker threads," it also enhanced the browser's performance and enabled drag-and-drop of tabs between windows.

Support for the video tag, part of the HTML 5 standard, has been pitched by developers as a way to ditch proprietary formats, including the popular Flash, and let site designers embed video directly into pages and then manipulate and control the video with scripting.

Mozilla is playing catch-up here with Apple Inc.'s Safari, which already supports the tag. Other browsers, however, including Google Inc.'s new Chrome and Microsoft Corp.'s Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2, have yet to offer support for the element.

Also in Alpha 2 is initial support for "Web worker threads," enhanced scripting functionality that lets site developers shift JavaScript computations to a background thread where they don't hit the performance of the Firefox user interface.

"The user interface will remain responsive while the [JavaScript] engine churns, and navigating away from the page will even pause its execution," Mozilla said in supporting documents about worker threads.

Other additions and changes to Firefox 3.1 showing up for the first time include: support for between-windows drag-and-drop; new support for several CSS (cascading style sheets) 2.1 and CSS 3 properties; and improved performance when viewing images with embedded color profiles.

Mozilla did not include its new TraceMonkey JavaScript interpreter in Alpha 2, however. The engine, which Mozilla recently said executes JavaScript as much as 28% faster than Chrome, will continue to be available only in Firefox 3.1 nightly builds, the dailies that Mozilla posts for its own developers. Firefox 3.1 has been touted as a fast-track update to June's version 3.0; that edition worked its way through eight alphas altogether.

Mozilla has declined to set a hard deadline for the browser, saying only that it is shooting for a late 2008 or early 2009 release. Last week, however, the open-source developer pushed back Firefox 3.1 Beta 1's schedule by three weeks.

This How-To will explain how to configure Mozilla's appearance options. This ranges from how font will be displayed, which themes and even which language Mozilla uses. The How-To consists of 6 easy steps. Appearance 1. Click on "Edit" and then on "Preferences" to open the preferences menu. 2. You will see a Window, when you click on the category heading "appearance". You can select the following: When Mozilla starts up, open:This lets you select which Mozilla component opens when you start Mozilla. The default setting is Navigator (the browser component). You can also chose Composer (an HTML editor) or Mozilla mail. Show toolbars as:This option allows you to chose between having your toolbars use- Pictures and text- Pictures only- Text onlyNote that the "pictures and text" may not be available for all themes. If you e.g. chose "Text only" Mozilla will not display buttons for "Back", "Forward" and similar funktions but text labels only. Mozilla’s Junk Mail Controls feature can evaluate your incoming messages and identify possible junk (or unsolicited) messages. The feature uses the Bayesian classification method, which requires that you first train Mozilla by showing it a bunch of mail that is junk, and a bunch of mail that is not.Then, you let it auto-classify new mail for you. If Mozilla makes any mistakes, you can correct them.

Do not be alarmed if the feature appears to do nothing when you first use it; the system will become very accurate if you use it often enough.

To use Junk Mail Controls:

+First, train Mozilla to recognize Junk messages and Non-Junk messages. There are three ways to toggle junk status of the selected message(s):

+Open the Tools menu, and choose Mark Selected Messages or Mark Selected Messages as Not Junk.

+Click on the Junk toolbar button.

Click to toggle the Junk Status column in the message list. (If you do not see it, click the right-most button in the list header bar and select Junk Status from the pop-up menu.)

+When you toggle junk status, a trash-can icon will appear or disappear in the Junk status column to indicate the junk status of the selected message.

+Open the Tools menu and choose Junk Mail Controls.... Enable the feature for your mail account, and Mozilla will automatically classify incoming messages.

+If you have trained it on virus mail, consider disabling the white listing (many mail viruses send bulk messages to people in the address book of the infected computer). Watch it catch messages that might contain a virus (e.g. klez)

+Make sure to correct the Junk control when it incorrectly labels messages either as junk or not junk.

+To analyze existing messages, select messages, open the Tools menu and choose Run Junk Mail Controls.

Mozilla's Spam filter perform better than Mail Shield's

According to the review, Mail Shield uses a points-based filter where each word is assigned a point value. If a message exceeds a certain number of points, it is automatically classified as Spam. Mozilla's Spam filter, on the other hand weighs words, i.e. it analyzes, how often certain words or combinations of words appear in Spam and in "good" messages. This is why it is so important to train Mozilla with Spam as well as with messages that are not Spam. To do that, mark messages that are already in your inbox (Windows users: hold down the "Shift" key and select the first and last message to mark all messages in between) and select Message -> Mark -> As not Junk from Mozilla Mail's menu bar. Alternatively, you can right-click on a message and select Mark -> As not Junk.

In my opinion, having a "Junk" icon but no "Not Junk" icon in the toolbar is a great usability shortcoming of Mozilla. This way, many users only train the Spam filters with Spam but not with "good" messages, leading to results that are less good than those obtained with a properly trained Spam filter. Getting back to the summary: So where Mail Shield just counts individual words, Mozilla's Spam filter analyzes words in context. The disadvantage of Mail Shield's approach is the fact that if a Spammer e.g. writes "e.n.l.a.r.g.e" instead of "enlarge" Mail Shields's filter will not detect it, i.e. not accord it any points. Mozilla, on the other hand is not thrown off by unknown words since the rest of the message will most likely follow a Spam pattern. Hard Tecs 4U also observed that after a while Mail Shield's results actually got worse - it started identifying all messages as Spam. According to Hard Tecs 4U, the second big advantage of Mozilla's Spam filter vs. static filters is that it contiuously learns - if Spammers change individual words, Mozilla will learn to recognize them due to the context they are used in. In short, they think Mozilla's Spam filter works great and they highly recommend both Mozilla as a browser and a mail client. My personal results with Mozilla's Spam filter after training it properly are as follows: - False positives: Zero - Spam automatically recognized: on average 70-80% The important thing here is that no "good" message was falsely recognized as Spam. For me, Mozilla does not automatically recognize all Spam messages as such. This is due to the following reasons: - There is a trade-off between recognizing Spam and having false positive results. This means that a very agressive filter will probably recognize close to 100% of Spam messages, but also give you many false positives, i.e. you may accidentally lose important messages. I personally prefer Mozilla's slightly less agressive settings. - Sometimes, there are new variants that Mozilla's Spam filter does not (yet) recognize. Once it has learned their composition, they, too will be detected. - Some "Spoof" messages, like "update your account information" (never enter your password or follow links in those types of messages! are virtually indistinguishable from offical messages since the criminals who send them try their best to make these messages look like they originate from Ebay, Paypal, your bank,... In conclusion, I am very impressed by the capabilities of Mozilla's Spam filter, but it is important to note that it is not 100% bulletproof. Before the Spam problem has not been fixed on a regulatory level, you still need to be careful who you give your email address to, avoid posting it on the Internet (e.g. message boards) and be careful with attachments (virii), "Click here to opt-out" links in Spam and with entering personal information (Spoof messages).

Mozilla's Mail fiter was trained with 300 Spam messages and 2700 "good" messages. Then, they let Mozilla automatically analyze 280 new Email messages. Here is a summary of their findings:

The analysis of the 2700 "good" training messages took about 1 Minute.
The subsequent automatic classification (Spam/not Spam) of the 280 new Email messages took only about 2-3 seconds
107 messages were correctly identified as Spam and moved to the "Spam" folder. Most importantly, not a single "good" message was classified as Spam!
The remaining 173 messages were identified as not being Spam and moved to the Inbox. Of those, 30 messages (17 per cent) were Spam but not identified as it.

These results are already very encouraging, especially when considering that Mail Shield's initial error ratio was 50 per cent and even after manual tweaking, it was still at 25 per cent.

One extension that I particularly recommend for those of you who have created large bookmark lists (e.g. for a research project) is Bookmark Backup from Pike. Bookmark Backup is a simple extension that helps to keep your bookmarks (and optionally other Firefox settings) safe. Each time Firefox is closed, a copy of your bookmarks file will be made to a backup location. If Firefox's bookmarks become corrupted or lost, find the most recent uncorrupted backup and copy it into your profile folder. Firefox 1.5 and up now automatically creates backup copies of your bookmarks file.

Importing Bookmarks If you have previously used a different browser or want to e.g. import your bookmarks from a memory stick or other media, Bookmark Manager's Import function is what you are looking for. To open Import, select File -> Import in Firefox's Bookmark Manager window. A new window will appear, asking you where you want to import your bookmarks from. If you want to import your IE favorites, or if you want to import bookmarks from a Mozilla Suite or Netscape 6/7 profile, select the appropriate option. Firefox will automatically find and import your favorites/bookmarks for you. If you want to import bookmarks from another browser, backed up Firefox bookmarks, or bookmarks from any other source, select From File. In this case, a dialog window will appear that allows you to select the file you wish to import. Please note that it may be necessary to export your bookmarks first, depending on the browser you want to import them from. Exporting Bookmarks Want to take your bookmarks with you or make a backup copy (highly recommended!)? In this case, Firefox's Export function comes in handy. Live Bookmarks

Live Bookmarks are a very useful Firefox feature. As the name implies, these bookmarks offer dynamically updated links/content like in the example below: As you can see, selecting the "Latest Headlines" Live Bookmark (it comes with Firefox when you install it) shows current news headlines that are linked to the corresponding articles. These headlines are constantly updated, i.e. when you select "Latest headlines" at a later time, you should see new headlines. Already, many sites like e.g. Yahoo News or BBC News support Live Bookmarks by offering RSS or Atom feeds. Firefox uses the icon for Live Bookmarks. This allows you to easily tell which bookmark is a regular (static) or live (dynamic) bookmark. Adding Live Bookmarks When a site that offers RSS feeds lets Firefox know that it does, adding a live bookmark is easy: You can tell that a site offers an RSS feed when you see the live bookmark icon in the lower right hand corner of Firefox's browser window. If you want to add a live bookmark for that site, simply click on the icon an then on Subscribe to... Select where you want to save the live bookmark and click on OK. Firefox has now added a new live bookmark for BBC News. Click on it to see their latest headlines. Manually creating a new Live Bookmark If the site does not tell Firefox that it offers RSS feeds, you can manually create a live bookmark. Usually, these site have links that say "RSS feed" or "Atom feed". Right-click on the link and select Copy Link Location. Next, open Firefox's Bookmarks Manager and select File -> New Live Bookmark. Sorting Bookmarks

Firefox's Bookmark Manager allows you to sort your bookmarks, as well. There are two ways to do this: You can manually sort bookmarks by dragging & dropping them to a new position You can use Bookmark Manager's automatic sort function. To access the automatic sort function, select View in Firefox's Bookmark Manager. (The sorting-related options have been marked in orange) Unlike for the Mozilla Suite, this will only rearrange the bookmark order in Bookmark Manager. If you want to rearrange the order in which they appear when you select Bookmarks, right-click on any bookmark in the browser window (not in Bookmark Manager) and select Sort By Name.

Firefox's Bookmark Manager is a very useful tool when it comes to managing your bookmarks. It allows you to rearrange, automatically sort, edit and to import or export bookmarks. To open Bookmark manager, select Bookmarks -> Manage Bookmarks. The Bookmark Manager window will open. Moving and Editing Bookmarks Firefox's Bookmark Manager has several buttons that will allow you to edit and move bookmarks: New Bookmark: This allows you to manually add a new bookmark. New Folder: This allows you to create a new bookmark (sub)folder. New Separator: This will allow you to add a new separator. The separator will be placed above the bookmark/folder that you have selected in Bookmark Manager. In this example, we have added a new separator to our Bookmarks Toolbar. Separators can help distinguish different bookmark categories from each other. Move: This will allow you to move the bookmark to a new position/folder in your bookmarks file. Mozilla’s Bookmarks Toolbar is a good place to save your most commonly used bookmarks. The easiest way to create a bookmark on your toolbar is to mark the site address (URL) and drag & drop it to the toolbar. To do that, select the URL, hold down the left mouse button and move it to the position on the toolbar where you want the bookmark to appear. Alternatively, you can also add a bookmark to the toolbar by using the "add bookmark" dialog. If you want to rearrange the order of your toolbar bookmarks, simply drag & drop the bookmark from its old position to a new one. To do that, click on a bookmark and don't release the left mouse button until the arrow is where you want the bookmark to be. When you right-click on a toolbar bookmark, you can easily access the context menu. Options marked in orange (note: this is not how it looks in Firefox) are for the bookmark you just clicked on, options in grey affect all bookmarks on the toolbar. Individual bookmark options are: Open: This opens the bookmark in the current browser tab/window. Open in New Window: This will open the bookmark in a new browser window. Open in New Tab: This opens the bookmark in a new browser tab. Cut: This will remove the bookmark from the toolbar and copy it to the clipboard, i.e. you can paste it somwhere else. Think of the keywords as a "shortcut" to your favorite sites. Description: You can enter a description for your site here. What would we do without bookmarks? With all the things we need to remember, not having to remember a site's address (URL) is a good thing, especially when the address is not as easy as "www.mozilla.org". With the help of bookmarks, Firefox remembers your favorite sites for you. To bookmark a page in Firefox, select Bookmarks -> Bookmark this page. The "Add Bookmark" dialog will open, asking you where you want to save the new bookmark. Select the folder that you want to save the bookmark to from the dropdown menu and click on OK. If you want to save the bookmark to the Bookmarks Toolbar, select Bookmarks Toolbar folder as the target. Alternatively, you can also expand the menu tree, if you want to save the bookmark in a subfolder. If you want to add a new folder, click on New Folder and enter the folder name. Bookmark all open tabs

You can bookmark all open tabs into a new bookmark folder. Open the Add Bookmark dialog (Ctrl+D or "Bookmarks -> Bookmark This Page" or "Bookmark this page" in context menu). Check the "bookmark all tabs in a folder" checkbox. Change the name to be the name of the new bookmark folder you wish to create, and then select a parent folder. Finally, click OK.

A folder with bookmarks to all open tabs will be created. You can later reopen the tabs you saved by middle-clicking the folder or selecting the "Open in Tabs" menu item.

Custom Keywords

Mozilla Custom Keywords ROCK! Not just for making shorthand for bookmarks but also for searches and queries. Simple keywords allow you to type a short string in the Location Bar and load its corresponding Bookmark URL.

An example is my bookmark for http://www.mozilla.org to which I've added the keyword m.o. So, with that set, I can type m.o in the Location Bar and it loads http://www.mozilla.org. Using keywords combined with autocomplete in Mozilla and I seldom type more than about three or four characters for all of the sites I regularly visit.

To set a keyword you must first create a bookmark for the URL. Then you add the keyword to the bookmark. Open the Bookmark Manager (Ctrl+B), choose your bookmark, and then open the Bookmark Properties window (Ctrl+I, or from the context menu). In the window simply add a short string to the Keyword field. Now close that dialog and you can type the keyword in the Location Bar, hit enter, and Mozilla will load that URL.

But that's just the beginning. Custom keywords can be used to create shortcuts for your favorite search engines too (the 'this ROCKS!' part). Here's how it works.

I'll use Bugzilla Bug Report lookup as an example.

Bookmark https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=%s , where the %s will be replaced by the bug number (query string)
Give the bookmark the keyword bug
Now typing bug 12345 in the address bar will load that bug.

The keyword "bug" followed by a space and the bug number will load the URL "https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=" + the bug number "12345".

There are probably other great uses for this, just try a query at your favorite search engine and look at the URL it generates. If you can replace your search string in that URL with "%s" you can probably make this work. Throw in a little java script and it's off to the races :)

Installing extensions in Mozilla

By default, extensions are installed for the current user only, but they can also be installed across multiple profiles and even globally.

Once installed, extensions can be configured by opening the Extensions Manager ("Tools -> Extensions") or by selecting "Extensions" from the the Add-ons Manager in Firefox 2.0 ("Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions") selecting the extension from the list, and then clicking the "Options" button. (If this button is disabled then the extension is not user-configurable.)

Single-user installation

Firefox: To install an extension in the current user profile, simply click the Install button on Firefox Add-ons or by saving the extension (which has a ".xpi" file extension) to your computer and dragging it into any Firefox window or opening it from the File menu.
Thunderbird: Download the extension, open Add-ons and click its the Install button.

Extensions installed in this way will not appear in any other profiles which currently exist or which are later created.

Multi-user installation

Multi-user installations are useful if more than one person uses your application. You should install and use the Mr Tech Local Install extension to configure your extension installations for multiple users. Alternatively you could simply allow multiple users to use the same profile; you must ensure that the profile folder is accessible to each of them on your system.

Global installation

A global installation will install an extension to the application directory rather than within a profile, so it will be available to all users. To perform a global installation you should not activate the .xpi installer file within your Mozilla application. Instead, download and save it to disk and ensure that you close the application completely.

Then follow one of the following options:

Restart your Mozilla application with the following command line arguments:

-install-global-extension "\extname.xpi"

where "extname.xpi" is the name of the installer file.

Copy the .xpi file into the \extensions folder. When you start your Mozilla application again, it displays an installation dialog, asking "The following items were found in your Extensions folder. Do you want to install them?"

Depending on the extension, each user may need to configure a globally-installed extension independently.

How to configure Mozilla's privacy and security features

People have various reasons for choosing Mozilla, be it that they want to try a "different" browser, they like Mozilla's features such as tabbed browsing or because they appreciate Mozilla's privacy and security features such as the Cookie Manager, encryption of saved data, the Spam filter and much more. Mozilla in my opinion is very secure browsers, even in their "out of the box" state. Still, with the right settings, you can make it even better at preserving your privacy and security while you are surfing the Net. Please note that there probably is not such a thing as perfect security, i.e. there may be security-related bugs that have not yet been discovered. Plus, safe use of the internet is always also the individual user's responsibility.

Keeping the Cookie Monster in check:

Cookies are small bits of information your browser remembers for a web site. Your browser saves your cookies in a text file on your harddrive. Cookies by themselves pose no security risk: They cannot contain a computer virus, nor can they be used to spy on you by reading your harddrive's content. They can be very useful and make surfing the Internet easier when used properly by making sites remember who you are and in some cases what you like. However, some companies use cookies to track you across various websites, thus recording your user behavior. What makes it worse is that often those are companies you never directly dealt with, which means that you neither gave them the permission to track you, nor do you know what you get out of the deal. With older browsers such as Internet Explorer 5.x or Netscape 4.x, you only had the choice of either completely disabling cookies, losing their benefits, allowing all cookies or having to say "Yes" or "No" to endless alert windows asking you if site "x" was allowed to set a cookie. Fortunately, newer browsers like Mozilla, Netscape 7, Opera 7 and to some degree Internet Explorer 6 give you the option to selectively allow and disallow sites to set cookies.

IMHO, the ideal setting is to check "Enable all cookies" and "Ask me before storing a cookie". This will make you answer "yes" or "no" to quite a few cookie dialogs, but with Mozilla you only have to do it once per site. Simply make sure "Use my choice for all cookies from this site"" is checked.

There are several alternatives, depending how you surf the web:

If you don't visit sites that need to remember who you are, or if you don't care for that feature, but you visit sites who only allow you to enter with cookies enabled, select "Enable all Cookies", check "Limit maximum lifetime of cookies to - current session" and uncheck "Ask me before storing a cookie". This way, Mozilla will accept all cookies but they are automatically deleted once your session is over (i.e. you close Mozilla).
As an alternative to the general recommendation, you can also select "Enable cookies for the originating website only" or "Enable cookies based on privacy settings". This should work in most cases and especially with larger sites, but it may not work properly with all sites.

If you have accidentally blocked or allowed cookies from a site, you can easily change that by using Mozilla's Cookie Manager.

Either open Cookie Manager by selecting "Manage Stored Cookies", which will show you all cookies that are currently set and site permissions ("Cookie sites"), or (un-)block cookies for the site you are currently visiting by selecting "Block Cookies from this site" or "Unblock Cookies from this site".
